Loved this! I am excited for this series and there seems to be some synchronicity here as well; I've been thinking a lot about the instinctual response when smelling a fragrance that doesn't seem "right." Our brains can sense that there isn't a certain expected cohesion or consonance is evident, and when we train our noses to discern these anomalies, this is how we sense that something seems "wrong."
"no two people have the same interior landscape." —what a metaphor than transcends our olfactory perception. Well done.
Loved reading this. Especially love this: “The rule is no scent notes — not “amber” or “wood” — because scent vocabulary short-circuits personal response and anchors everyone to the same reference points. We want the raw reaction, not the trained one.”
Wonderful thoughts, so well written! I love knowing a name for this familiar process I know I’ve had myself- a scent bloom!
Brings to mind a memory from the age of 20 (I’m 52). I was a hostess at a restaurant, and seated a perfectly lovely foursome for dinner. I walked away and burst into tears, completely caught off guard with such deep emotion. I realized several minutes later, after walking by the table again, that one of the women was wearing my beloved grandmother’s perfume. She had died a couple years before, and had been an huge part of my life. I had never really processed that she wore a specific perfume, I just knew how she smelled. And here was someone who smelled just like her, which I could not bear. I later asked my mom if grandma wore perfume, and said yes- quite a lot lol- she told me what it was, and that it had been popular in the 1970s, but not recently. I occasionally hunt it down and smell it, and I am immediately transported to childhood.
You tapped into the depth of this, allot more to discuss about scent and memory recall, in the next I plan on looking into scent and memory recall, its fascinating and surprising. Thank you for reading!
